Transcrtical Sensry Aphasia
The classic lesin site assciated with transcrtical sensry aphasia is the area surrunding Wernicke’s area, excluding
Wernicke’s area itself, namely the angular gyrus (Brdmann’s area 39) and the pste-rir prtin f the middle tempral gyrus (Brdmann’s area 37). These are knwn as the tempral lbe watershed regins, r areas f verlapping peripheral bld flw near Wernicke’s area. Accrding t Damasi (2008), assciated lesins may prject int the lateral prtins f the ccipital lbe r anterir prtins f the middle tempral gyrus (Brdmann’s areas 18, 19, and 21). The hallmark symp¬tms are similar t Wernicke’s aphasia, with the exceptin that repetitin is intact in transcrtical sensry aphasia. Peple with this type f aphasia als smetimes ech thers’ wrds as they are listening t thers speak.
Transcrtical Mtr Aphasia
The classic site f lesin fr transcrtical mtr aphasia is in the anterir water¬shed area f the left frntal lbe, extend¬ing t the prefrntal areas. Damasi (2008) reprts that lesins may be in Brdmann’s areas 6, 8, 9, 10, and 46. The hallmark symptms are similar t Brca’s aphasia, with the exceptin that repetitin is intact in transcrtical mtr aphasia.
Nte that the terms sensry and mtr in the labels fr transcrtical aphasia are misnmers in that, by definitin, n frm f aphasia is a mtr r sensry disrder. These misnmers are persistent artifacts remaining frm years f use in the clini¬cal and research literature, dating back at least as far as Wernicke’s classic text, Der aphasische symptmencmplex, in 1874. Their persistence may have been exacer¬bated by the fact that nt all languages include terms that clearly distinguish speech frm language.
Mixed Transcrtical Aphasia
There is n clear agreement abut a classic assciated site f lesin fr mixed trans- crtial aphasia, althugh it may be ass-ciated with cmbined multifcal lesins in the frntal and tempral watershed re¬gins. It is similar t glbal aphasia, with the exceptin f intact repetitin ability.
